Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then found numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say early analysis show the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the community for information.
A senior political figure commented the incident rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed rapidly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the killing of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on residents of migrant background in five years prior.
